Onyeka Onwenu, died on Tuesday night, July 30, 2024, at Reddington Hospital in Lagos State after collapsing at a friend’s birthday party CEO of Emzor Pharmaceuticals, Mrs Stella Okoli, where she had performed.
She was born on January 31, 1952, in Obosi, Anambra state, Nigeria. She graduated from Wellesley College in Massachusetts, USA, earning a Bachelor’s in International Relations and Communication.
Onwenu was a Nigerian singer, songwriter, actress, journalist, politician, human rights and social activist and former X Factor series judge.
Onyeka Onwenu’s Achievements Over The Years
Onyeka Onwenu has received numerous awards and recognition for her contributions to music, public service and her epic role in the popular movie “CONSPIRACY” which was released in 1999 by Ndubuisi Okoh and Chimidi Chiama, where she played a mad woman named Grace.
She was also featured in movies such as Half of a Yellow Sun by Chimamanda Adichie and Lionheart whose Executive producer was Genevieve Nnaji.
The now-late Onwenu was raised by a woman who had been widowed twice by age 37. Her mom, Dame Hope Onwenu was such an inspiration to her. In tribute to her mom, she wrote and sang the song “Ochie Dike Mama”, which has become an anthem for mothers since 2010.
