Laila Inspires Many Young Women Across Nigeria

Laila Johnson-Salami is the Wonder Woman we all need to know about.

Laila is a professional global journalist, writer, media personality and podcaster based in Lagos, Nigeria. She was born in Ibadan, Oyo State on the 3rd of December 1996. She studied Politics and International Relations at the University of Westminister in the United Kingdom (UK).

Laila dedicated her early career years to collaborating with governments and non-governmental organizations and focusing on policy creation and sustainable development initiatives.  After completing her three-year program, she envisioned a career with organizations such as the United Nations and the World Health Organization (WHO). However, she soon realized that pursuing such paths was not truly what she desired.

She was determined to impact others by sharing stories and discovered she had a passion for journalism, and decided to choose a career in media.

My goal is to use my platform to highlight the voices of those overlooked and advocate for changes that will positively impact people’s lives.

Laila Johnson-Salami has always known she had a passion for journalism. Her core passion lies in Empowering young women to rise above systematic oppression and the stigmatization of Feminism, she advocates for gender equality and youth empowerment, and she can do so through the media.

The 27-year-old currently works as a correspondent for one of the major news networks in Nigeria, Arise News. She joined in May 2019 as a co-host at the morning show. In 2022, she received the inaugural UNDP/UN Women International Women’s Day Award for the Media and Entertainment category, and she was also a nominee for the 2022 Gatefield People’s Journalist for Africa Award.

In December 2021, she married Abasam Onyia in her hometown in Ibadan, and by September 2023 at only 26 years old, Laila and her husband welcomed their first child, Nova Diana.
