Bullying remains a constant issue that is persistent in most Nigerian schools, as highlighted in a recent viral video of a student bullied at Lead British International School in Abuja.
The video shows a student engaging in a violent act of bullying toward another student. The disturbing video sparked public outrage to ensure immediate intervention, safety and well-being of students in Nigerian schools.
In response to the recent incident, the Minister of Women Affairs, Hon. Uju Kennedy-Ohanenye, took decisive actions during her visit to the school. After discussions with the school’s management, they agreed to expel the students involved in the bullying incident and to temporarily shut down the school for a few days for further investigation.
The minister emphasised the importance of fostering an environment where students, can feel safe and empowered to speak out against bullying. She condemned not only the actions of the students but also highlighted the role of teachers in fostering a culture of respect and empathy.
”Barrister Uju Kennedy-Ohanenye was Appointed Minister of Women’s Affairs. She obtained a Bachelor’s degree in Law from Nnamdi Azikiwe University, which laid the foundation for her renowned career in law and humanitarianism.”
The minister emphasized the gravity of the situation and the issue at hand and urged the school to take necessary proactive measures to prevent the situation from repeating itself.
