A Rainy Day in Abuja

The Story:

Hello everyone, my name is Rose, and I’m writing here because I need to share my pain with others who might understand what I’m going through.

On a rainy Monday, 22 February 2016, I sat quietly at my computer, listening to the rhythm of raindrops against the window. At around 1:06 PM, my phone rang. It was Oscar, my boyfriend. He said, “Love, I’m on my way to the airport for a business meeting. Don’t worry if I don’t call before dinner.” I told him to have a safe trip and went back to what I was doing, the rain providing a melancholic soundtrack but also made me feel a bit sad.

At 4:20 PM, our house phone rang. I didn’t answer, but then I heard my mum scream. I ran to her and saw her crying. I thought maybe my grandmother had died. But when I looked at my dad’s face, I saw sadness on his face. I asked what happened, and he told me it was Oscar’s mum on the phone.

She said Oscar had died in a car accident on his way to the airport.

My heart stopped. I started screaming that it couldn’t be true. Oscar was only 34 and he had just celebrated his birthday. How could a healthy, young man die like that?

They told me that Oscar was seen holding his phone in his chest, and my number was on display. He didn’t even have time to call. It was a retired doctor nearby who started CPR right away, and as soon as help came, they tried to revive him for almost two hours, but it was too late.

From that day, I felt like I died with him. Yes, my heart keeps beating, but my soul left with his. We had been together for three and a half years and got engaged on Christmas Day. Oscar and I were getting ready to get married. We had already picked the dates, and I and my friends had already chosen the colours for the wedding.

We were so excited about our future together. I still wear the beautiful ring he bought me with his savings. I loved him with all my heart. Even though we couldn’t see each other often because of distance, but we were happy.

Oscar had so many interests. He loved playing soccer games, and his favourite team was Manchester City. He was an angel. I always felt lucky because my first love lasted so long, he was so romantic and kind. He was my strength during tough times, always patient with my complaints. He was the only one who was there for me in my darkest moments. Before we met, I didn’t believe in love and felt useless. But when we kissed for the first time, I felt alive for the first time.

My mind is filled with our memories. I could write a thousand pages about our story. I know I’m not the only one who has to overcome the death of a partner, and those with children must live for them. But I’m left with only messages, photos, and memories. I don’t know if or when I will get better or when I’ll start having a social life again.

All I know is that I will never be able to love anyone else like I loved him.
